Exploring Best Practice Approaches to Data Migration

Business application migrations are not trivial projects and many of these will include a business transformation component. These are often driven by application version upgrades, retiring of legacy or bespoke applications, consolidation across multiple application instances, hybrid cloud migration, business process re-engineering to mergers and acquisitions. The common denominator across all migration projects is data and where a significant amount of project time and money is allocated. Trusted data is fundamental to helping you in achieving your transformation goals and driving better business decisions. What are the best practice approaches to data migration? Base on a recent IDC Business Value Study, organizations achieve 8-month payback and 303% ROI with SAP Advanced Data Migration by Syniti when migrating to SAP S/4HANA, SAP SuccessFactors, and SAP Ariba.

Last Mile Reporting: Lessons Learned to Help Close the Reporting Gap

Modern analytics tools have changed the way *some* users interact with their data and even revolutionized their day to day tasks. Why only some? Because there’s always some who don’t ‘buy-in’ to what IT is selling. But by making the last mile of reporting as smooth as possible, the road less travelled (for these users) becomes much more appealing. A healthy mix of tools and resources should do the trick for these users, but only if you balance them properly. The goal of this session will be to give some real-life examples of finding that balance. We’ll talk about how it’s not just the tool that makes the job easier; its giving users a variety of resources to balance that shiny new modern BI tool.

Get in Front of Digital Finance or Get Left Behind – Moving to SAP S/4HANA

Get in Front of Digital Finance or Get Left Behind – Moving to SAP S/4HANA

Implementation of SAP S/4HANA are often complex, disruptive and time-consuming. It is seen as less of a system upgrade and more of a total transformation. To ensure successful implementation, finance processes need to be assessed, remapped and simplified. Having been part of multiple global SAP implementations and with over 15 years leading finance teams, Frank Florian draws on his expertise and asks Cormac Denton and Amanda Harsas to share the key learnings from their recent SAP S/4HANA implementations experiences when they were with Kapura and Healius Limited.

Kapura rolled out SAP S/4HANA cloud in 28 days in March 2019 while continuing to grow. The roll out had its hurdles with 4 verticals, 50 business units and integrated with several other systems. It wasn’t easy, but the rewards have been great – a future proofed system.

The evolution of finance in Healius, one of Australia’s leading healthcare companies, has left a highly complex SAP general ledger, and often conflicting system enhancements and rules needed to support. In getting ready for SAP S4/HANA, it became evident that process and technology needed to walk together to create a sustainable solution.

They discuss:
– What are the business drivers for making a move to SAP S/4HANA?
– How do you prepare for a finance transformation and refine business processes to set you up for success?
– Exactly how did Kapura go about rolling out SAP S/4HANA cloud in just 28days?
– What are the common hurdles organisations face and how did they overcome them?
– How do you successfully manage the people and change component of digital transformation?

Demystifying and Understanding Gender Topics in Modern Organizations

Demystifying and Understanding Gender Topics in Modern Organizations

Political Correctness is a safe way out, but won’t fix workplace confusion about gender.

Today gender issues are so complex, nuanced and confusing for many that we navigate workplaces with political correctness, lest we unknowingly offend someone we work with. Yet the unintended consequences are numerous; If we do not seek to learn and understand, we won’t know how to respect people nor role model the right behaviors. If we assume these are things we are supposed to know, then no one learns. Leaving gender concepts in the closet prevents them from entering mainstream understanding and some colleagues don’t feel safe to bring their whole selves to work.

We’ll discuss:

– How to be respectful of people at work, when you’re not sure how they identify.
– Tools to find out how to hear and see the whole person, nurturing safety, human connectedness, and respect.
– What our organizations need to provide in the workplace to make it inclusive for everyone?
– How should I support employees who may be having a hard time accepting people.
– How to make it our business to know and understand the world we live in to enhance inclusion and belonging.

How to Complete Account Reconciliations on Day 1

How to Complete Account Reconciliations on Day 1

From manual excel reconciliations to an automatic cloud-based solution. Harry Elder joins Joe Demian to share how Visy brought transparency and control back to the reconciliation process over a 6-year journey, using Blackline and SAP Connector technology. The user led software required minimal I.T. involvement and can be managed directly by the finance function. Manual loads at head office were developed to push the SAP open line items directly into Blackline each month. By improving the reconciliation process, users were able to focus their time on the key areas of risk and analysis.

Using the SAP connector technology, the manual loads were automated, allowing users to easily meet new policy and deadline requirements. This means any line item management in SAP can now be pushed directly to Blackline in a timely fashion, so users can complete reconciliations in time for financial close.

Harry will discuss;
– The old-world Vs the new – why this technology was right for Visy
– What factors made the project a success?
– The tangible business benefits
– Bringing your people on the journey

Building a Culture of Security

When thinking seriously about cyber security, we have to admit that technology, systems and our “hard” controls are doing their jobs. Only 3%-5% of reported breaches are ever attributed to hardware, software and/or systems failures. Hence, our biggest risks are always people! And if 95% of breaches are attributed to people and culture, how come most senior managers are still not taking cyber security culture and the behavioural side of security seriously? (Remember that world-wide estimates put the costs of cybercrime at over $65billion and the average costs of a breach in Australia is estimated to be well-over $1m.)

James Carlopio, John Zhao and Robert Budic unpack the topic of elevating a cyber security culture in your business. They discuss the myriad of ways in which you can help to bring the need for substantial investment in cyber security cultural transformation to the top of the agenda in your organisation.

The Universal Journal and Profitability Analysis

In this session we introduce the universal journal as a wider, deeper version of the general ledger that removes the need for separate sub-ledgers to provide one giant pivot table for your financial reporting.

We look at how the formerly separate worlds of Financial Accounting and Controlling combine and what happens to the separate applications for Profit Center Accounting, Cost of Sales Reporting, Profitability Analysis, and so on, discussing which applications can be used in parallel going forward and which form part of the compatibility scope and will no longer be supported from 2025.

We discuss the differences in approach between a conversion and a transformation and the factors in your own SAP implementation that will affect your choice of approach and look at the case for modernizing the user experience using SAP Fiori or remaining with the classic transactions for an interim period.

Delivery of the New Zealand Police Firearms Reform Solution from Start to Finish in 3 Months

In March 2019 New Zealand experienced a significant terrorist event that led the New Zealand Government to implement significant legislative changes to remove military style semi-automatic firearms from circulation through an amnesty and buy-back program.

A series of applications was developed over a 3 month period that allowed the New Zealand Police to undertake this program. By hosting the UI5 applications on the SAP Cloud platform we were able to take advantage of a variety services on the platform to implement some unique technologies such as the use of QR Codes scanning for tracking of firearms, and SAP Open Connectors to integrate with DocuSign. Utilising the Cloud Platform also meant we were able to deliver applications rapidly and develop in an iterative manner to continually improve the experience delivered to the end users.

This presentation will discuss the journey we embarked upon to deliver a world first solution that enabled citizens to register firearms that they would hand in and enable the New Zealand police to manage the firearms from notification through to destruction.

Getting Prepared for Successful Digital Transformation and Significant Organisational Change

Research consistently indicates that between 50% and 80% of ERP implementations, organisational re-engineering (BPR) and change efforts fail to deliver promised benefits. Why does this consistently continue to happen? And, what are the major issues leading to failure?

While we must get the “technical” installation issues correct when implementing an ERP system, this alone, will not ensure a successful implementation. Transformational Change experts, James Carlopio and Nella Rano are joined by Matthew Kent, CFO of GPC to unpack the topic of change management success for better digital transformation outcomes.

– How do you define change management?
– What are the key factors that truly make a difference toward success?
– What are the common structural and cultural changes in an organisation’s social system, that lead to a successful transformation?
– How do you approach communication and what works well when implementing across cross cultural projects and teams?

Transformation to BW4/HANA; and From ECC to SAP S/4HANA, the Cloud and Beyond

William Kingwell interviews Erin from ElectraNet and Ross from Christchurch City Council

To respond to a rapidly changing business environment ElectraNet needed a modern analytics platform to support next generation applications. ElectraNet choose remote conversion to migrate to BW4/HANA.

BW4/HANA has dramatically improved load and query performance and provided a platform for applications that would not have been feasible on old BW 7.x. Erin will cover the implementation story including why they chose remote conversion, their experience as early adopters and the things that they’d do differently.

Christchurch City Council’s digital transformation hit another milestone with the transition to SAP S/4HANA, implementations of BPC11 and BW4HANA in October 2019. Now that they are in the Cloud and almost six months down the track…..what has S4 brought them, has it delivered on its promises, and what about Hybris and SuccessFactors?

• Why did they do it?
• What did they do?
• What were the surprise challenges?
• What did they learn?
• What’s next?

How to Automate and Optimise Your Financial System

A recent study from McKinsey identifies that up to 70% of tasks in finance are potentially ‘automate-able’ with next-generation technologies. This will mean that a lot of the tasks we spend our time on today as knowledge workers will be accelerated by automation tools. We’ll have more time to advise the business on strategy and growth plans – and we’ll hopefully spend less time trying to pull relevant reports out of our ERP systems.

In this discussion Nic Nicoloudis is joined by Kristian Kalsing and Stephanie Hudson Miller to unpack some of the burning questions for those looking to begin or enhance their finance automation journey.

• In today’s environment, where should CFO’s be focused right now?
• What are the different components in a portfolio of automation capabilities?
• What are some innovative ways customers are adapting to the new reality?
• How do you successfully scale automation beyond initial pilot projects?
• What are the emerging technologies to watch in Finance automation?

Preparing for a Shared Services Environment

Federal Government has an appetite to standardise their systems. The idea is to rationalise all their ERP implementations. The question is how does one prepare for this? Is it best to go to one system or to adopt a hub method where large departments’ instances absorb and host related departments? It is critical to understand what they are going to lose and what they will gain when they go this route.

Join our panellists Aaron Liu, Lloyd Hewitt and Chris Rae as they discuss and explore the factors driving the movement to shared services and the challenges that organisations and agencies face when such a step is taken. The conversation will focus on all aspects of the move from people, to process and technology. It will look at what has worked and what hasn’t in the past.

• Rationalising ERP instances down to one/few system(s)?
• Preparing data and teams for a shared service environment
• Standardisation – How do we get there?
• Pre-empting what you are going to lose and what we are you going to gain from the move

How Aurizon Reduced their Risk Violations from Over 1 Million Violations to 40 by Driving GRC Best Practice

Aurizon was able to achieve full access risk compliance after a one and a half year journey to close out 1.7 million access risk violations, following the implementation of GRC. An extensive review and analysis process was performed, reducing that number to around 40.

To achieve this, senior management, the SAP security team, finance representatives, and security stewards were engaged throughout the process to understand the steps needed to be taken, interpret the data and participate in formulating a remediation plan that aligned with SAP Best Practice. Following the achievement of these results, the next phase for Aurizon is to improve and build on the governance framework and work towards controls self-assessment.

Xinja Integration and Security with SAP and AWS

Xinja is a 100% digital, cloud-based neobank, built using SAP’s new C4/B Core Banking platform deployed to SAP’s private cloud and Xinja’s own micro-services architecture built on AWS. Building a safe, secure bank in the cloud is a challenge, and subject to strong regulation by APRA and string information security standards under CPS-234.

Xinja achieved the necessary capabilities and maturity through an extensive assurance program that encompassed AWS and all their suppliers including SAP. They believe that they could not have achieved this as a startup enterprise without the awesome security capabilities of AWS and the maturity and strength of SAP.

Xinja builds all of the integration between the many platforms making up their landscape, using a post-SOA microservices architecture built on Kubernetes, Kafka and DynamoDB fully deployed using advanced automation capabilities to AWS. SAP integrates via event-based restful web service API’s that fit well into the overall event streaming architecture. SAP’s API’s are one of the most important aspects of the modernisation of the SAP banking platform.

When Projects Fail, It’s All About What’s in the Contract

Budget blowouts due to cost overruns, extra resources, unplanned expenses, delays and accountability vacuums. Sound familiar? This is what happens when a system implementation goes wrong and as the financial executive in charge you’re the one who has to sort it out.

When things go wrong, there are many questions asked: Which party caused the problem? Did each of the parties do what they were meant to? Who dropped the ball? Who is responsible for fixing it?

A contract doesn’t typically answer these questions, but it should. Contracts should not only protect your legal position but also clearly set out the framework of the engagement.

Ashley Saltzman mediates commercial disputes and escalations at SAP across Asia Pacific & Japan. He previously held the same role at IBM in Australia & New Zealand. Put simply, he cleans up the mess left behind when projects go wrong.

In this session, Ashley will share with you –

• the 3 key reasons for project failures
• the critical omissions in contracts and how to fix them

It is all about what’s in the contract.

It has become increasingly clear over the past few years that the ball will be spending much more time in the “experience” half of the field. People and businesses are starting to pay real attention to all aspects of experience and its impact on human behaviours. Think of the pervasive influence that technology has had on organisations everywhere.

The incredible influence of the I.T Department and the CIO. Will we see the emergence of an “Experience Department” with a CXO offering real-time advice on experience and behaviour across the business? Will we see projects to deliver “Experience Infrastructure” into the wider organisation?

A good tax-paying experience is not something you often hear about. So, when in 2017, Queensland Treasury’s Office of State Revenue (OSR) outlined their vision to do just that—improve the experience for taxpayers while delivering on their commitments to government—it was a massive undertaking, and unlike anything attempted before.

Fast forward 2.5 years and OSR are well on the way to creating next generation tax and revenue management capabilities that are data-driven, digitally enabled and client centric. Join Acting Deputy Commissioner, Amy Rosanowski, to find out how OSR have pushed the boundaries of data and innovation to transform the way they operate and the services they provide. Amy will showcase how OSR have used SAP Leonardo Machine Learning, SAP Qualtrics, SAP Data Hub, SAP Marketing Cloud and SAP Analytics Cloud to provide more personalised and proactive services for taxpayers. OSR has successfully completed 36 digital initiatives already, with another 8 projects in flight. The result? Change, Your Finance Team and the User Experience

Frank Florian and Mark Hawksbee join Carmen Lyons to discuss all things change and user experience when it comes to digitally empowering your Finance team.

IT transformation projects are often guided by business but lead by IT. This can create a misalignment of value for effort, and frustration soon creeps in. Creating working groups that represent the business (to evaluate process requirements) as well as technologists (to manage constraints and capabilities) creates a streamlined approach to development.

So how do you manage a transformation projects when teams’ expectations need to be managed, and corporate strategies need to be met?

Data is abundant, organised in Data Warehouses, Data Lakes and from IoT sources and measuring and planning concisely requires a consistent Analytics Strategy. In this presentation, you will learn how Analytics Cloud integrates and complements the Line of Business Planning to create visibility and transparency of true profitability and financial performance of the organisation.

Successful Integration – Put the Core of Your Business in the Hands of Your Users

Successful Integration – Put the Core of Your Business in the Hands of Your Users

Powerco is NZ’s second largest electricity and gas distribution business. Getting accurate information on the location and condition of assets to and from the field is key to keeping the lights on and gas flowing. Despite spending millions on maintaining asset information in the company’s geographic information system (GIS), the data was not widely used or trusted.

In 2019 Powerco implemented the first phase of its ERP and Integration strategies. This introduced a new business foundation based on S/4 HANA and stitched it into the existing application fabric redefining core business processes and data flows using a hybrid integration approach. By “getting good at” integration, alongside new mobility tools, they have put location and asset information in the hands of every employee and contractor, improving safety and efficiency. Powerco continue to invest in their integration capability to extract more value from their ERP investment and also to enable new solutions and partnerships.

Discover the Integration DNA of the Intelligent Suite from SAP

Graham Robinson interviews Sindhu Gangadharan

Come listen to SAP’s Integration Thought Leader and Head of SAP Labs India, Sindhu Gangadharan as she explains how SAP aims to deliver an overall experience across the enterprise for the intelligent suite that is greater than the sum of its parts. Accordingly, SAP offers technologies for integrating applications on all levels, such as user experience, data, processes, and more. Along the journey from on premise–centric application landscapes toward hybrid and cloud environments, customers need to revisit their integration solution strategy. Modern enterprises require a hybrid integration platform supporting cloud, hybrid, and on-premise integration use cases. Furthermore, new concepts are applied for enabling true out-of-the box integration and openness to integrate with non-SAP applications.

Workshop 1: Developing a Mindset for Success for the NOW of Work

2020 will be remembered as a year of dramatic world shifts, the digital workplace and remote work, building capabilities for crisis and for adaptive culture, and redefined workforce experience. Approached with optimism, the NOW of Work presents incredible opportunities for organizations who establish a people-first mindset that encourages experimentation, innovation, and growth.

We’re witnessing a monumental shift in how work gets done as well as the processes required to empower the HR function and the workforce while successfully leveraging new innovative technology. HR is the function best positioned to work with the business to drive workforce engagement. Without a new mindset in HR, organizations will struggle to keep pace with the needs of a modern workforce.

Join Jason Averbook, CEO and Co-founder, along with David Guazzarotto, Managing Director Asia Pacific as they walk you through a journey to understand how far workforce technology has come, what matters and what doesn’t, and four priorities you need to embrace to drive success for the future.

Four Priorities in the New World of HR:

1) Adopting a digital-first mindset. Begin thinking about a digital action plan that’s tied directly to the business and people strategies of the organization
2) Understand the importance of a solid, anti-fragile foundation and build a people data plan
3) Comprehend what makes up a digital workforce experience and know the difference between automation and digitization when thinking about processes into the future
4) Define the skill set HR needs to be successful and how to move strategy into an actionable plan for the organization

This session is designed to challenge your thinking and give you new techniques to reimagine the HR function to deliver a ‘digitized’ workforce experience. Leapgen will offer insights to guide your team, empower your workforce and sustain transformational new processes built on a secure, “anti-fragile” foundation.

Automating Finance at Australia Post

Dr. Nicholas Nicoloudis, from SAP’s Innovation Factory, chats with Catherine Phan, Australia Post and Carmen Lyons, Blackline.

When Catherine was appointed to lead the General Accounting function at Post, her initial thought was “How do I transform the month end process using the best technology in the market to deliver a saving of $1M?” Using Lean Six Sigma, the problem statement for her transformation project would be:

-800 balance sheet accounts were performed by 5 different teams across 5 different locations

-30% of manual journal submitted to General Accounting team for uploading to SAP often had errors and required correction.

It was critical to centralise the like activities in the same area and restructure the team. Next step was to standardise the process so they could automate. After thorough research, it was decided to use Blackline for reconciliation process and RPA (Robotics Process Automation) for uploading and validating manual journals.

How Finance Teams are Becoming the New Champion of Employee Experience

Matt Goss of SAP Concur interviews Pranay Lodhiya on the topic “How Finance Teams are Becoming the New Champion of Employee Experience”.

Change is driven to achieve a positive outcome. The Public sector in Australia have undertaken a goal to improve and align systems. In a world where organisations are looking for every possible market advantage, improving the employee experience can provide impressive results, this is the space we find ourselves in today.

According to a Gallup study, employers who focus on employee engagement experience 17% higher productivity, 20% higher sales, and 21% higher profitability. But creating a great employee experience isn’t just an HR function. In fact, the Finance Team has a significant role to play in implementing the technology and processes necessary to help employees focus on meaningful work instead of paperwork.

Pranay was involved in transforming the Finance function and bringing together multiple systems to enhance the employee experience. Join this session to hear how the Bureau of Meteorology focused on user experience as a key driver for achieving the visibility and compliance they needed to better control costs, forecast cash flow and gain insights that help the bottom line.

Social Architectures: Relevance of Connected Business

Social Architectures: Relevance of Connected Business

Real-time technology gives us the potential to connect everything with everything else. In the automotive industry, it is visible on the shop floor, production, customer experience, and certainly in the wider space of “autonomous.”

When we speak about social architectures, we are discussing the combination of processes, data, and values related to a consumer.

Doing these things requires different kinds of end-to-end processes, different ways of relating to consumers, different ways of acting towards competitors, along with knowing that potential consumers in the Internet of Things (IoT) world are also visible to all other participants in the market. Capabilities such as artificial intelligence (A) or blockchain, quantum computing, and open borders in IoT will make different business models and kinds of collaboration possible.

With moving from products to service, we have even more potential if we keep in mind that a connected world will use intelligent sensors and intelligent infrastructure. Then we can anticipate intelligence networks.

Viewing this from an overall perspective, the speaker will give also insights on an automotive SAP S/4HANA greenfield journey.

Key Business Benefits:

• End-to-end overview on digital mega trends and challenges in business
• Link to potential business cases and impact on SAP landscapes
• Usecase on SAP greenfield

Sweating the Controls Platform Asset – User Intelligence and Controls Platform

Sweating the Controls Platform Asset – User Intelligence and Controls Platform

Jochen Fischer OF NO MONKEY GmbH interviews Gerald West of Serco Group (UK)

The typical use of a controls platform is firstly to manage risks around access controls, mainly around segregation-of-duties and critical access, and perhaps to implement some process controls to support the integrity of the SAP systems.  These use cases deliver significant value around risk reduction and the benefits usually justify the investment in the controls platform.  The controls platform is an asset, and like any asset, we can squeeze more value from it – we can sweat the asset.

In this session, we examine how Serco has sweated its controls platform asset, extending its use to cover additional SAP requirements (e.g. access to personal data, managing COVID-induced system challenges etc.) by using a simple 5-step methodology.

Find Your A-game

When an elite sports team approaches a season-defining tournament, succeeding demands that each team member brings their ‘A-game’. Many of us find ourselves in a similarly defining period of our lives; faced with significant opportunity and challenges which require us to consolidate and then execute on our A-game.

The term is well-used, but the make-up of it remains little known. In this talk, Paddy will share the A-game framework he developed from two decades of coaching some of the world’s best athletes and teams.
